Someone just asked me in a PM for a template for cold email. I told him to go to the best of thread and do a search in the sub for a generic one and customize it for each prospect. He said he couldn't find it. I'm thinking, 'dumbass, learn2searchengine' but nope, he was right.
Hence, below is what I consider a generic successful cold email. This is what I will copy and paste when someone asks the question 100 times a day but I will give that question more information assuming they tell us what they sell and who they sell to (which people never do).
A few caveats to the template. It won't work as well with simple products. The point of the template is to come off as someone who cares about their individual needs and you can't really do that when you sell sand or whatever.
Also, I am a firm believer that every single cold email should be customized for your audience. Maybe not so much for an SDR calling SMB and has to make 100 calls a day but even a little goes a long way.
'THE TEMPLATE'
Hi <First Name>
<Your company name> is a provider of <product> specializing in <value proposition>.
We've been able to help companies like <competitor of theirs> by <solution> and I was hoping for a few minutes of your time to get a better understanding of your <product> needs to see what we can do for you as well.
There's room on my calendar on Tuesday morning. Would you be able to free up a few minutes for a short call?
Regards,
<signature>
If you want to customize it further, you can try this:
Recently on <LinkedIn/Google News/Twitter> I saw that <their company> is <current event> and I thought that it would make sense for us to chat because of our unique offering.
I would add that to the first line. I wouldn't make the email any longer than this. The point is to keep it short enough for them to read the bulk of it in the preview pane of the email app of their tiny iPhone or Android.
Some rules:
No bullet points - Go work for marketing this isn't an ad
No pitching - Aside from a single value proposition on saying why your company or product is so good, you cannot pitch a product when you do not know their needs!
No selling on price - SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!
Subject line? Try all kinds of stuff. Quick question has worked well for me. Something with their first name in it is extremely effective. 'One more thing', 'You are not alone', 'It's about that time' all have been very good for me.
Just don't be deceptive. Something like, 'Question about your last invoice' will piss them off.
Please add your own templates and critique. I will be having this added to the Best of Sales post.
